The L403A1 is the centerpiece of the UK Ministry of Defence’s Project Hunter, selected as the next-generation standard rifle for the British Army, Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), and Royal Marines Commandos. Based on Knight’s Armament’s KS-1 (an advanced iteration of the SR-16), the rifle features a 13.7-inch dimpled heavy barrel, URX-6 free-float handguard, and the proven Stoner internal piston gas system paired with the enhanced E3 bolt—offering improved reliability, modularity, and control under demanding field conditions.
The AIW system integrates a Vortex 1-10x LPVO, Aimpoint ACRO P-2 red dot, QDC/MCQ-PRT suppressor, reinforced cold-weather trigger guard, and fully ambidextrous steel controls including the selector, mag and bolt releases, and charging handle. Weighing approximately 3.1kg unloaded, the rifle is supported by UK-based prime contractor Edgar Brothers, who oversee component integration and delivery. It is now actively being fielded by the British Army, including special operations units and the Royal Marines’ reconnaissance and strike companies, replacing legacy L85A3 and L119 platforms.
The L403A1 marks a return to the AR-platform as a frontline standard, setting the stage for the UK’s infantry modernization. With plans to procure over 10,000 rifles in the next decade, the L403A1 is set to become the core weapon system for British forces engaged in high-intensity, joint-force operations.
